All incumbents, the candidates (with vote totals in parenthesis) are Louise Day Hicks (128,358), Thomas Eisenstadt (101,386), Joseph Lee Jr. (91,649), William O’Connor (73,552), and Arthur Gartland* (56,295). Hicks’ total is a record for a Boston municipal election up to that time. Unsuccessful candidates include Mel King (51,171) and John Carney (51,306).
